Came to the attention of West Ham United after an impressive display for Chile against England at Wembley.
His stay at Upton Park was not without incident, however, as he struggled to adapt to the English game.
At one point, he went back to Chile after a series of lacklustre performances and it looked as if his Football League career was over.
However, the eccentric defender returned determined to prove that his previous form was not representative of the real him and was much more successful the second time around.
When he left the club, he promised any West Ham fan visiting Chile a free holiday in one of his chain of hotels.
