Place of birthBirkenhead
NationalityIrish
Weight75 kg
Height1.78 m
PositionMidfielder

McAteer guaranteed his place in Ireland's footballing folklore with the goal in the amazing Lansdowne Road qualifier in September 2001 that subsequently led to the Republic's Play-Off with Iran and Holland's elimination from the World Cup.

He made his League debut for Bolton Wanderers who recruited him from non-League Marine in 1992.

He progressed at Burnden Park under the guidance of former Scotland captain Bruce Rioch to secure a £4.5million to Liverpool in 1995.

McAteer had become a regular in the Republic's squad before he moved on to Blackburn Rovers in a £4million switch in 1999.

He ended a generally frustrating spell at Ewood Park by teaming up with his Republic colleagues Niall Quinn and Kevin Kilbane at Sunderland.

McAteer is a member of a famous boxing family and the nephew of two former British middleweight champions, Pat and Les McAteer.

He joined Tranmere Rovers in July 2004 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2007 in June 2006.
