Fowler had a frustrating time in 2000-01 when he seemed to be lacking in energy. It took the medical staff some time to find the cause of this but he was eventually diagnosed as suffering from an over-active thyroid. He featured in a handful of first team games for Cardiff City and by the end of the season had been given the all-clear. At his best Fowler is one of the Bluebirds most creative forces in midfield with a great touch, good passing skills and the ability to produce the unexpected.
Fowler signed a new two-year deal with Torquay United in April 2003 but announced his retirement in January 2005 due to a hip injury.
