Barnett was out of favour at Lincoln City at the start of 2000-01 but soon forced his way into the team appearing at right back and as a third centre back on occasions when a five man defence was used. His long throws and ability to push forward gave the Imps extra attacking options. He missed a number of games in the second half of the campaign after suffering a bout of pneumonia but recovered to win his place back.
