Campbell signed for Exeter from Brighton in 2000 close season and was a virtual ever-present in the left back position in 2000-01. Dangerous going forward and at set plays he scored against local rivals Torquay in the 1- 1 draw on Boxing Day and also netted in the home game against Southend. He performed consistently well throughout the campaign and took over as captain when Chris Curran was injured. He was deservedly voted as City's 'Player of the Year' at the end of the campaign. Campbell asked to go on the transfer list in February 2002.
