This young Welshman made his long-awaited senior debut for Blackburn when he came off the subs' bench at Sheffield United and went on to score a double in the 4-1 Worthington Cup win over Portsmouth and another goal against Bolton. When Marcus Bent arrived from Sheffield United he journeyed in the opposite direction in a loan deal that allowed him to stay at Bramall Lane until the end of the season. He was mostly used as a substitute by the Blades, and after being sidelined by an injury at the beginning of the new year he came back to score the winner in the 3-2 home win over Preston. A pacy striker he showed skill in holding the ball and patience in his build up. James again appeared regularly for Wales U21s winning seven more caps during the season.
James signed a new two-year deal with Swansea City in June 2003.
