Had a brief spell with Newcastle United before moving to Motherwell in 1919. Re-joined Newcastle from Falkirk in January 1924.
Having made his mark in Scotland, James was signed as a replacement for Frank Hudspeth only for the great full-back to extend his Tyneside service by many more years.
