Lekgetho became the first South African to play in Russia when he left Moloko Swallows for Lokomotiv Moscow for the 2001 season. Born in Soweto, he had be been a great favorite at Swallows. He earned his first international call up for the friendly with Malta in Valletta in May 2002. It was while he was with the B squad that he came to the attention of Lokomotiv though. The South Africans were taking part in a tournament in Portugal in early 2001, while Loko were there in a pre-season training camp. He had been recommended to the club by Swallows Russian-born coach Viktor Bondarenko and was soon snapped up. Despite the obvious cultural and climatic differences, Lekgetho has gone on to provide tremendously consistent performances at left back or left wing back, and was named Russia's top foreign player in 2001. He missed this season's African Nations Cup due to injury, but it was still a surprise that he was left out of South Africa's original 23-man squad for Japan and South Korea. He has since been included following the knee injury to Matthew Booth.
