Burns joined Leeds United in August 2001 after a successful pre-season trial and won an early appearance in the first-team squad due to the club's injury problems.
He found himself on the bench at Barcelona in the Champions' League, and because of the worsening situation, he made his Premiership debut in central midfield in the 3-1 win against Charlton Athletic in October. He remained in the first-team picture, making another eight appearances including some in the European matches against Real Madrid and Lazio.
Self-assured and very focused, Burns's contract at Barnsley was extended to June 2005 in June 2004.
