Balis was recruited by West Bromwich Albion manager Gary Megson to bolster his squad at a time when injuries and suspensions were causing some concern. However he took time to settle down and only started one game all season, although he came off the subs' bench on a number of occasions.
A very quick right wing back with plenty of international experience, due to a reoccurance of tinnitus (the condition that causes constant ringing in the ears), Balis announced his retirement in July 2003 and returned to Slovakia.
