Sonko originally signed for Brentford on non-contract terms before signing a permanent contract for the remainder of the season in December 2002.

He extended his stay at Griffin Park for another year in June 2003.

Sonko joined Reading in July 2004 with a contract to June 2006 that was extended to June 2008 in July 2005, then to June 2010 in December 2006.

He joined Stoke City in August 2008 with a three-year contract.

Sonko joined Ipswich Town in August 2011 with a one-year contract.
