Woan joined Barnsley on a two-month contract in August 2000 but although he showed that he clearly had a cultured left foot he failed to win a longer deal at Oakwell. In October he moved on to Swindon Town, arriving soon after Andy King was appointed manager and went on to be a key figure in the centre of the park for the Robins. An expert with dead-ball kicks he set up numerous goals for his colleagues and netted a few himself, including a great strike with a 45-yard free kick at Rotherham and another direct from a corner against Northampton. Very much a favourite with the County Ground faithful he was runner up for the 'Player of the Season' award before moving to the United States to play for Columbus Crew in the summer.
