Richardson switched from a midfield role to a position on the left-side of central defence for Notts County in 2000-01 but continued to perform with his usual effectiveness. Although absent with a knee injury for a lengthy spell in the new year he returned to the line-up for the closing matches. A player who has great pace and is very strong in the air, he is popular with the Meadow Lane faithful.
Originally released at the end of the 2001-02 campaign, Richardson subsequently signed a new one-year contract with Notts in August 2002. He began the 2003-04 season on weekly terms before concluding a permanent deal in January 2004 with a contract to the end of the 2003-04 season.
