Kilford once again showed his versatility for Wigan Athletic in 2000-01, appearing in a variety of roles during the campaign. Essentially a right-sided midfielder, he was effective when pushing forward into the opposition penalty box and scored four vital goals. He had the misfortune to suffer a broken wrist early into the new year and the injury kept him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.

Kilford joined Scunthorpe United in November 2002 on non-contract term. He subsequently secured a one-year deal in June 2003.
