A trainee at Wigan, Ian appeared mostly in the youth and reserve teams during the 2000-01 campaign but stepped up to make a promising debut from the subs' bench in the LDV Vans Trophy tie at Oldham Athletic. He also appeared in the second round tie at Walsall in the same competition. A right-sided midfield player, he is the grandson of former Liverpool manager Ronnie Moran.
