Hughes once again captained Blackpool in 2000- 01 and rarely missed a match during the campaign. A hard-tackling central defender he is strong in the air and very popular with the Tangerines' supporters. He performed consistently well all season, netting with a late header in the 2-0 victory at York and adding a vital goal in the play-off final against Leyton Orient.
Hughes joined Huddersfield Town in July 2003 on a one-year contract.
