An injury meant that Ian was out of the first-team picture at Hartlepool United for the first three months of 2000-01. He then resumed his friendly battle with Sam Shilton for the left-back position but there was rarely anything to choose between them, and finished the season as first choice - also being offered a new contract by manager Chris Turner.
Ian is a left-sided utility man who can also play in midfield and attack and likes to push forward and take defenders on.
In November 2001 he became the first player to move directly from Hartlepool United to Darlington since Paul Olsson in August 1994.
