A former England youth international, Ian is a left-sided defender who normally operates as a wing back but can also play in a left-sided central role in a 5-3-2 formation.
He had the misfortune to suffer a cracked fibula playing for Queens Park Rangers against Crewe at the end of August 2000 and it was not until November that he returned to first-team duties.
Despite Rangers' poor form during the campaign, he maintained consistent form and always made a positive contribution to the side.
Ian was one of 15 players released by the Loftus Road club in the summer but Notts County were quick to ensure his signature.
He moved on to Scunthorpe United in July 2004 on a one-year contract that was extended to June 2006 in April 2005.
By now also a member of the Iron's coaching staff, Ian's United contract was extended to June 2008 in March 2007.
