Ashbee had another fine season for Cambridge United in 2000-01 and once again missed only a handful of games.
A versatile player who can feature in midfield or anywhere in the back four, he scored two goals in the 6-1 win over Rotherham United in September and also netted with a great 25-yard free kick in the crucial 2-0 win at Northampton Town towards the end of the campaign.
Having skippered the Tigers to back-to-back promotions, Ashbee's contract at Hull City was extended to June 2007 in May 2005, then to June 2008 in June 2006.
It was further extended to June 2009 in March 2007 and to June 2011 in October 2009.
He joined Preston North End in January 2011 with a contract to June 2012 that was cancelled in February 2012.
