Anderson began his career in his native Scotland signing for professional forms for Dundee after starring in their junior sides in 1996. He made his debut in the 1996-1997 season and became the youngest scorer in the Scottish Premiership when he scored on his league debut against Falkirk. He was not offered a new cotract by the club and left on a Bosman Free when he signed for Tolouse in July 1999. He did not really settle in France and jumped at the chance to play in England when Preston signed him on loan as cover for the injured Lee Cartwright in February 2000. He was a virtual ever present and won a second division championship medal and made the move a perminent one on the first day of pre-season training for £ 500,000. Anderson's story of last season was one of injuries and comeback goals. Typical of his bad luck was when he received both head and hamstring injuries in the same incident against Fulham. He played in all three play-off matches but the team failed at the final hurdle. His 2001-2002 season was much the same as the last, interupted by niggling injuries. A fast and tricky ball-playing winger who can operate on both flanks, he is most dangerous on the left from where he can cut inside and unleash powerful shots.

Anderson joined Grimsby Town in July 2003 in a two-year deal but returned to Dundee in July 2004 with a two-year contract.
