The claim that the 5ft 5ins Scot was the game's greatest-ever centre forward would gain knowing nods from those who saw him between the wars. A fantastic career record of 463 goals in 624 games indicates his amazing attraction. His sale to Chelsea (As Chelsea's first £10,000 player) caused outcry on Tyneside and a St James' Park record gate of 68,386 - with an estimated 10,000 locked out - witnessed his first return with his London club. With his playboy image, it was no surprise that Hughie became such a cult hero in Newcastle. He was capped 20 times by Scotland and scored five goals in a game against Ireland in 1929. Sadly, he took his own life by stepping in front of a train while facing charges of cruelty to his son.
