An intelligent defender, powerful and positive, he played a huge part in United's 'treble' season of 1998-99.
He subsequently rejoined his former club Blackburn Rovers in a three-month loan deal.
Quickly establishing himself at Ewood Park, he was very much the man that made it all happen for Rovers.
A near ever-present he dominated at the back, and after signing permanently he guided the team to promotion back to the top flight.
A competitive centre half he rarely lost out in physical encounters and was always involved in the action supporting his colleagues and imposing his will on opposition strikers.
