The Bull of the Bosphorus started his career at Sakaryaspor, but attracted the attention of bigger clubs following his move to Bursaspor. He signed for Galatasaray in 1992, moved to Torino in 1995 but became homesick and soon returned to Galatasaray. He also returned to his best form as they won the UEFA Cup in 2000, beating Arsenal in the Final in Copenhagen. After scoring 173 goals in his eight seasons at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium and a superb performance against Italy in Euro 2000, he tried his luck again in Serie A at Internazionale who paid £4.9million for his services. Despite an impressive first season at the San Siro, he fell out of favour following the arrival of Hector Cuper in the 2001 close season and moved on to Parma for £2million.
With an international scoring record of a goal every other game, it seemed Hakan was key to Turkey's hopes in their first World Cup finals since 1954. However, his notable influence had a negative impact following a bust-up with coach Senol Gunes shortly after their opening game with Brazil.
Although he played in all seven of Turkey's games in the 2002 World Cup finals, he didn't enjoy the best of tournaments until scoring after only 10.8 seconds against Korea Republic in the 3rd / 4th place Play-Off - the World Cup finals fastest-ever goal. The previous record holder was Czechoslavakia's Vaclav Masek aginst Mexico in 1962.
