Having done well for the France Under-18 team that won the UEFA championship in the summer of 2000, Gregory joined Liverpool soon afterwards but was not expected to see much senior action in his first season at Anfield.
However, he made rapid progress and after making his debut as a substitute in the FA Cup Third Round tie against Rotherham United in January, he was called up for his first full game at home to West Ham United the following month as a replacement for Jamie Carragher.
He held his place for the subsequent game at Sunderland when he performed admirably, and several further appearances followed, enabling him to rise above his compatriot Djimi Traore in the pecking order for the left-back slot at Anfield.
Gregory joined Portsmouth in July 2005 with a two-year contract.
He joined Birmingham City in August 2009 with a one-year contract.
