Rioch missed the start of Macclesfield Town's 2000-01 season with a hamstring injury and played his first match at the end of September, coming on from the bench to take the right-back position. He featured just a handful of times until the beginning of January when he was introduced on the left side of midfield where his speed and agility were put to good use.

He then moved to Shrewsbury Town on transfer deadline day making his debut in the 2-2 draw at Lincoln City. He featured at left back for the Gay Meadow club performing with commitment and enthusiasm.

Rioch holds both UEFA 'A' and 'B' coaching certificates and is the son of the former Arsenal manager Bruce Rioch.
