Strong began his professional career at Wigan Athletic, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in September 1995 after three seasons with the Latics.
However, he failed to win a regular place for Wanderers and eventually moved on loan to Motherwell in March 2000.
He settled down to win a first-team slot at Fir Park, proving to be a reliable central defender who is particularly effective in the tackle.
Strong moved back to England with Third Division Hull City on a three-year contract but was made available for transfer by the Tigers in April 2003 before joining Boston United in March 2004 with a contract to June 2006.
He was made available for transfer by the Pilgrims in November 2004.
