Grant McCann went out on loan to Notts County in August 2000 but, after looking promising in his first few games, he was injured and returned to West Ham United.
In November, he joined Third Division Cheltenham Town in a long-term loan deal, staying almost to the end of the season.
Performing either at left back or on the left side of midfield, he impressed with his attitude, his speed and some fine skills on the ball.
He returned to Upton Park at the end of the Football League season and went on to make his senior debut as a late substitute in the final game at Middlesbrough before signing a new contract for the Hammers.
Grant continued to represent Northern Ireland at Under-21 level, winning a further six caps during the season.
He joined Cheltenham Town for a club record £50,000 in January 2003, in a two-and-a-half year deal.
The previous record was £25,000 for Kim Casey from Kidderminster Harriers in 1991.
His Cheltenham contract was extended to June 2007 in December 2004.
After a loan spell, he joined Barnsley in January 2007 with a contract to June 2009.
Grant joined Scunthorpe United in January 2008 with a contract to June 2010.
He joined Peterborough United in July 2010 with a contract to June 2013 that was extended to June 2015 in July 2013.
