Coughlan had his contract at Plymouth Argyle extended to June 2006 in April 2004.
He re-joined his former Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock at Sheffield Wednesday in July 2005 in a three-year deal.
Coughlan was made available for transfer by the Owls in May 2007 before joining Rotherham United in July 2007 with a two-year contract.
He joined Shrewsbury Town in July 2008 with a two-year contract.
Coughlan joined Southend United in July 2010 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2013 in June 2011.
