England international Gordon Milne was signed for £16,000 from Preston by Bill Shankly. He proved a great success helping Liverpool to the 1st Division Championship in 1964 and 1966, 2nd Division Championship in 1962 and European Cup Winners' Cup runners-up spot in 1966. He went on to manage Wigan Athletic, Coventry City, Leicester City and Besiktas.
