Although no longer a first-team regular at Turf Moor Gordon remained an important member of the Burnley squad in 2000-01. His appearances were mostly to cover for injury and suspension to one of the regular back three, although he was also occasionally used in a sweeper role. Whatever was asked of him his experience (with over 650 appearances at club level) and professionalism shone through and he never let the side down. Possibly Gordon's finest performance of the season came in the 2-1 win against champions Fulham on a night when his gritty qualities were transmitted throughout the side.
Gordon joined Accrington Stanley in June 2003 on a one-year contract.
