After nine seasons in the Dutch Second Division with SC Veendam, Manchester City paid £500,000 for the skilful defender on 28 July 1997. A consistent performer in the heart of the CIty defence during 1998-99, Gerard lost his place to Richard Jobson midway through the following season and was eventually moved to central midfield to utilise better his superior passing skills. A good reader of the game the Dutchman has formed a good partnership with Alfie Haaland in the centre and relishes the chance to get forward on set pieces - scoring his first Premiership goal against Leeds United in September 2000.
