O'Callaghan struggled to win a place in the Port Vale first team in the 2000-01 campaign and it was not until the Boxing Day visit to Wrexham that he made the starting line-up, and then in an accustomed role as striker.

Lack of further opportunities led him to make a transfer request but there were no takers and O'Callaghan was confined to the reserves until being recalled at Brentford for the LDV Vans Trophy Final rehearsal when both teams fielded some fringe players.

A slightly built midfield player with a never-say-die approach to the game, he was transfer-listed at the end of the 2001-02 season.
