Allan joined Liverpool from Leith Athletic, and with Liverpool won the 2nd Division Championship in 1896. He moved to Celtic in May 1897 but returned to Liverpool in April 1898. He was Liverpool's first Scottish international, winning his one cap whilst scoring twice against England in 1897. Tragically died after contracting tuberculosis aged 24.
