De Vlieger was the only player to appear in every minute of Belgium's qualification for the 2002 World Cup finals.

He took over as the Red Devils' first-choice keeper following Euro 2000 when he took over from Filip de Wilde.

Originally with Beveren, who have a history of producing fine goalies, he moved to Anderlecht where he was also Filip's understudy.

He got his chance when De Wilde moved to Sporting Lisbon, but De Vlieger did not take kindly to be dropped when Filip returned from Portugal after a year, and decided to join Harelbeke on loan.

His subsequent return to the Brussels club saw him in such good form that he was linked to a move to England with Newcastle United.

The recall of De Wilde sparked his switch to Willem II.

De Vlieger joined Manchester City in July 2004 on a two-year contract.
