Rae joined Dundee as a 17-year old from Hermes Juniors in September 1995 and made his senior debut later that season.
He went on to win six Under-21 caps for Scotland but seemed to lose his way somewhat following the arrival of new manager Ivano Bonetti.
However he fought his way back into the team to become a key figure in midfield at Dens Park in 2000-01 and his superb performances earned a full international debut against Poland in April.
