Despite signing a new one-year contract in the summer, Gary was never a regular at Preston last season. Having recovered from a serious knee injury, he made his first start for 18 months against Wimbledon at the end of August and then replaced the suspended Graham Alexander for a run of three games in November. Finally he featured in another brief run in the new year before moving on to Lancashire neighbours Blackpool where he appeared regularly at right back for the remainder of the campaign. He is a hard-tackling defender with a powerful shot and capable of delivering an explosive free kick. Gary went on the Bloomfield Road transfer list in March 2002 and joined Stalybridge Celtic in August 2002.
