Everton won a tug-of-war with Coventry City for the services of the Scottish international full back and, the way the 2000-01 season ended, Gary was convinced he chose correctly.
Evertonians were also well satisfied with their capture from Heart of Midlothian, especially after he marked his debut with a dream of a pass at Newcastle United to lay on a match-winner for Kevin Campbell.
An attack-minded left back or wing back, Gary also weighed in with a couple of invaluable goals, most notably an injury-time winner at Bradford City.
An appalling gash in his knee which required 37 stitches effectively cut short his first season in English football.
Gary's contract at Everton was extended to June 2008 in June 2005.
He joined Sheffield United in July 2007 with a three-year contract.
Gary joined Huddersfield Town in July 2010 with a two-year contract.
