Hughes produced some excellent displays at right back for Northampton in the first half of last season before dropping back into the club's reserve team where he was mostly played as a central defender. He scored his first-ever senior goal with a shot from the edge of the box in the 2-1 win against Oldham last October after rising from his sick bed to play in the game. Gary appeared regularly on the bench as an unused substitute in the second half of the campaign and, although released in the summer, was soon snapped up by Kettering Town.
