Whalley started the 2000-01 campaign as a regular in midfield for Bradford City but then had to miss three months in the middle of the season after having a hernia operation.
Best used in a 'holding' role in the centre of the park, his passing and distribution are excellent, and he has a thoughtful approach to his play, showing fine vision.
He returned for the Bantams in the middle of March and was soon back to top form.
Whalley joined Wigan Athletic in September 2004 with a contract to the end of the season.
