Unable to get a game in the first team at Manchester City, Gareth eventually moved on loan to Burnley in the New Year and his arrival proved something of a masterstroke for Clarets' manager Stan Ternent.

On his debut for the club, he set up a goal for Ian Moore as league leaders Fulham were despatched 2-1 and a fortnight later he scored the winner in a 1-0 win at Watford.

His striking partnership with Moore was a key factor in Burnley's revival towards the end of the season with Gareth playing as a target man and bringing the best out of his more deep-lying partner.

Gareth, who is a constant threat to opposition defences always giving 100 per cent effort, joined Nottinham Forest in August 2003 in a three-year deal but was made available for transfer in January 2006.

He joined Tranmere Rovers in July 2006 with a two-year contract.

Gareth joined Doncaster Rovers in January 2008 with a contract to June 2009.
