This nippy young striker developed a reputation for being in the right place at the right time at youth level for Torquay United and was rewarded with a professional contract last November. He made his first-team debut from the subs' bench in the LDV Vans Trophy tie against Bristol Rovers shortly afterwards and featured on a number of occasions later in the campaign. Gareth scored his first goal in senior football when he netted in the 2-1 win over Darlington in April. Gareth was released by Torquay in March 2002.
