Surely Bolton Wanderers' most improved player in 2000-01, Gareth was a touch of class at the heart of a successful team.
Consistently outstanding throughout the campaign, he was at his most dangerous when on the ball.
With the ability and the vision to pick out the right pass almost every time and also in possession of a mean shot when he chose to let fly, he represented a constant threat to opposing defences even though his final tally of goals was a little disappointing.
However, he capped a fine season by netting the vital first goal in the Play-Off Final against Preston North End.
Gareth joined Wigan Athletic in March 2004 with a contract to the end of the season.
