Kanoute is a centre forward who appears to have all the attributes required to be a top player in his position - pace, quick feet, strength and skill. However although he did well for the Hammers in 2000-01, finishing up as the leading scorer, he was hampered by a niggling hamstring problem that prevented him from performing at full capacity for much of the campaign. He was unstoppable in November and ran the Leeds United and Southampton defences ragged in away wins for the Hammers. While he was on fire at Christmas and the New Year netting seven goals in a run of five games including doubles in the 5-0 win over Charlton Athletic and in the FA Cup victory over Walsall.
Media stories of an impending transfer began to circulate towards the end of the 2002-03 season and Fredi eventually moved to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2003 in the deal that saw Matthew Etherington move in the opposite direction.
