McHugh found it difficult to break in to the Swindon Town line-up in 2000-01 and managed only a handful of games, all in the second half of the campaign. A hard-working creative midfield player with neat ball control he was released by the Robins in the summer. Before returning to the Football League, McHugh also played for Bromsgove Rovers.
McHugh was made available on a free transfer by Bradford City in December 2003 before his contract was cancelled by mutual consent, allowing him to rejoin his former Tamworth boss Gary Mills at Notts County on a monthly basis which was subsequently extended to the end of the 2003-04 season.
