A regular with England's Under-21s and the carrier of a £8million transfer tag, his earlier Everton form eluded forward Francis during his spell at Arsenal.

After forging a fruitful partnership with Kevin Campbell the previous season - statistically one of the most effective in the Premiership - Francis was forced to go it alone in 2000-01 because of injury to his partner.

It made little difference, with the young striker enjoying a devastating scoring burst to start the season.

The intelligence and timing of his runs made him elusive for defenders to pick up, and his finishing was invariably excellent.

With five goals in his first five Premiership outings, he was rubbing shoulders with the leading scorers in the country, until a sixth goal in a Worthington Cup tie at Bristol Rovers was followed by an ankle ligament injury and five months on the sidelines.

Typically, he scored in his comeback game before succumbing again to injury, then a dislocated shoulder in a home game against Manchester City ended his season for good.

Francis joined Charlton Athletic in August 2004 with a two-year contract.

He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in July 2006 in a two-year deal.

Francis joined Sheffield Wednesday in August 2007 with a three-year contract but was made available for transfer in August 2009.

He joined Accrington Stanley in March 2013 with a contract to June 2013.
