A versatile defender who can play in all of the back four positions or in midfield he is the teams best player. He began at Shanghai Shenhua where he won the Championship in 1995 and has been a regular member of the Chinese team ever since being made captain in 1996. He was signed by Crystal Palace in 1998 with countryman Sun Jihai and was an instant hit with the fans. He moved to Dundee United in 2001 and has continued his excellent form. A strong aggressive defender who is good in the air, quick on the ground and despite his age has a fantastic engine. Despite playing at the back he was joint top scorer in China's qualification for the 2002 World Cup being a constant danger from set plays.

He joined Cardiff City in November 2002 on a contract to the end of the season.
