The tiny schemer – he stood only 5ft 4ins tall – became a regular choice at Newcastle on their return to the First Division in 1948. Ernie starred in United's 1951 FA Cup Final win against Blackpool but was soon to become a Tangerine and won a another winner's medal in the 1953 Matthews Final.
A legendary playmaker, this tiny inside forward joined United instantly post-Munich to guide a young, patched-up side to the FA Cup Final.
