Meijer was very much on the fringes of the Liverpool first-team squad last season and made only three brief appearances from the substitutes' bench in the opening weeks of the campaign. In October he was loaned to Preston North End where he set up an injury-time winner against Norwich on his debut. However after nine appearances without a goal for the Deepdale club he opted for a return to the Bundesliga, joining SV Hamburg on a free transfer. A tall striker he had excellent ground skills and is even better in the air.
