Having progressed through the youth ranks at Nantes, Eric became one of Cameroon's young hopefuls.
Alongside fellow Indomitable Lion Saloman Olembe, he made good progress in 2001-02, most notably with a remarkably mature performance against Lazio in the Champions' League to ease Nantes into the Second Phase.
Coach Winfried Schafer invited him to a training camp at Leverkusen in November 2001, and subsequently played a key role in midfield as Cameroon retained the African Nations Cup in Mali.
Although a skilful performer, Eric's competitive edge leads to more than his fair share of yellow and red cards.
At Manchester United, he proved a big disappointment, lacking the class to run the midfield.
Eric joined Aston Villa in January 2005 with a contract to June 2009.
