Having appeared for Chelsea in the surprise 2-0 defeat at Bradford City in August 2000, Emerson was quickly on his way to Sunderland, signing for a new record fee for the Wearsiders. Nicknamed 'The Wall' due to his imposing physical stature, the Brazilian centre back made his debut against West Ham United and then scored his first goal for his new club in the home game against Coventry City when he powered home a header that proved to be the only goal of the game.

A strong tackler, his defensive qualities particularly impressed the Sunderland fans while his partnership with Jody Craddock at the centre of the defence was very effective.

Emerson joined Bolton Wanderers in August 2003 in a one-year deal. He then moved on to Wigan Athletic in a two-year deal that was cancelled in February 2006.
